Essential Tremor

These medicines have been shown to ease the tremor in about half of affected people. It is not clearly understood how this genetic change leads to essential tremor. However, it is likely that it somehow affects some parts of the brain that are responsible for controlling movement. The main symptom is shaking of one or both hands or the head. As many as one in four people develop essential tremor as they age.

The person has a 50% chance of having an unaffected child. Those people who develop a tremor when they are younger than 40 years are less likely to have a worsening of their tremor. This aims to minimise side-effects and maximise benefit. It may produce a good response in up to 9 out of 10 affected people.

The Brain and Essential Tremor

Many patients with essential tremor (ET) report transient improvement of symptoms after drinking alcohol. However, the brief duration of action, subsequent rebound, and the risk of developing alcohol addiction make the use of alcohol as a treatment for ET inappropriate. Whether excessive alcohol consumption is a risk for or a consequence of ET has been a subject of some controversy. In this review, we critically examine the mechanism of action of alcohol and its role in ET and other movement disorders. The goal in treating essential tremor is to provide symptom relief that can improve quality of life.

And staying active socially is an important part of maintaining both your emotional and physical well-being. Stress, caffeine and certain medicines may make the tremor worse. If stress makes your tremor worse, you can learn ways to reduce your stress. In essential tremor, tremors begin when you use your hands.

It also can expand from one part of your body to other parts over time. Doni Jones, an English teacher, first noticed a slight tremor in her hands while grading papers or writing on the board in her classroom. As part of the exam, your doctor may consider other causes of tremor, such as thyroid disease, too much caffeine, or medication side effects.

Some treatments and medications help ease the pain and these tremors. You may also want to be careful when moving around and doing simple tasks like grabbing items or moving them. You could always ask for help to do simple essential tremors and alcohol tasks if your ET gets to a high level of difficulty. Another thing you need to avoid is caffeine and certain medications that increase your tremors. Stress plays a huge part in increasing these tremors as well.
